Here you have a true gem, a really magick collection of english folk songs sung by the (unearthly, otherworldly, pure, austere, resonant, dreamy, sincere, ancient, crystalline) voice of Shirley and aptly accompanied by the spectral sounds of her sister Dolly.

SHE'S THE QUEEN OF CELTIC FOLK MUSICK and I love her!

from CD Liner Notes:

This CD is a re-issue of most of the music recorded by my sister Dolly and me for Topic Records from 1963 to 1978. Listening again to these tracks confirms my love for English traditional music, which I believe has two important functions: firstly it links us with our past in a way which is both mysterious and powerful, and secondly, it is the voice of countless generations of labouring people whose work was exploited but not acknowledged, whose welfare was neglected, and who were rarely honoured in our history books. I find it remarkable that people who lived such hard lives had the spirit to produce songs of such beauty and subtlety, but it is small wonder that so many of the songs are melancholy.

It seems like a miracle to me that these songs survived at all, having been passed down for centuries by word of mouth alone. i was fortunate enough to be born into a family that in everyday life sang songs which were to me a perfect expression of what I thought and felt. I was privileged, too, to have heard several old traditional singers in the '50's. Listening to them I learned to understand and respect the music, and, like them, to sing with my natural voice.

I would like to thank David Tibet for making the whole venture possible and for his faith in the music.

Shirley Collins

Since I first heard Shirley some seven years ago, I have been captivated by her voice and her approach to the songs she loves. These songs remain everfresh in her, and it is an honour to have been able to release this compilation.
The True Love Knot lives on...

Don't make it so difficult for people to download. Passwords are very irritating. You make it double irritating by wanting us to mail. We just want to download. If you don't understand that, if you cannot give without wanting people to do something for it, than do not give.

Hey anonymous,
since you're the first one complaining (with this tones) about the password policy, I'll not consider you as statistically significant.

I do not think that sending just one single e-mail is so utterly unacceptable...and consider that I add people to my mailing list and you'll automatically receive the password every time a new post is out.

Hope to have you aboard soon!

"We just want to download." by anonymous ... Well, I know you want ... but Margot wants you to do something in return... it's her choice and you comply or do not comply. It's a free world, anonymous : do you want the record so much ? Go & buy it or search for another place to download it.

This is a terrific album. I'd always procrastinated getting a Shirley Collins album because I had no idea what it would sound like. But I reckon I should trust David Tibet's taste, since he was right about Harry Oldfield some years earlier.

This one is a perfect fit with the recently issued compilation "John Barleycorn Reborn: A Discovery of Folk Music From Dark Britannica"

I finally just got the chance to listen to this for the first time. Her voice is pretty out-of-this-world; I can't pinpoint exactlly what it is about this that sets it apart, but I've never heard anything quite like it. Plus, the tunes are well-worn, sturdy.

This is a very good compilation of Shirley (and at times, Dolly) Collins' music. However it is incorrect to describe her as "the queen of Celtic folk musick". She did record a few Celtic songs, but the overwhelming majority are of English origin. If you listen to Celtic songs or Celtic singers you will immediately hear the difference.

Thanks for the post. People are hearing the brilliance of Shirley Collins and that always makes me happy.

Unknown said...

Yes, you're absolutely right and I make my excuses for the silly mistake (caused by the fact that my Celtic origins are quite loose)
