from The Wire (issue 185):

Irascible maverick and one-time Scratch Orchestra member David Jackman is best known for Organum which specialises in grating noise blizzards, ambient environmental sound and metallic screeching, all with a striking ritualistic quality.

But the solo album, Sol Mara, takes a very different track. First released as a one sided record included with Organum's Ikon, its CD version accompanies the original with three variations, all built entirely from looped samples of bamboo flute.

It lies somewhere between the Fourth World music of Jon Hassell, a limpid, reverie set in a World Music netherzone, and ponderous, hypnotic minimalism.

Hmmm... not sure what mood I'd have to be in to listen to this. I'm curious to hear what other people make of it.

I tend to agree with you...this could result in one of those "love-it-or-hate-it" works

Let's see what my beloved readers say

Like my old buddy, Steve Roach, this guy is more into quantity than quality, but this is definitely one of his more imaginative efforts. Lots more info on David here: http://www.chronoglide.com/organum.html

Thank you dear margot.

I'd not compare Steve and David...apart for the totally different musick they make, I think that Roach was (still is?) excessively iper-prolific and rarely went you an authentic genial work like "Sol Mara".

Anyway this is just my opinion.

Love

Good Jackman and good Organum
I never heard this one, very interesting indeed!
Thank you Margot

The only Organum I've heard is bowed cymbal stuff, so this was new to me. I like it a lot. Thank you!

I think it's lovely, and "genial" is precisely the word for it. Thank you.

imho, this is more into electronic/avantgarde than psych.
Not particularly original too (some Brian Eno, maybe MMM by Lou Reed). But very listenable, anyway.
I don't hate it, but not for me. I'm not going to take it to the old famous desert island.

The intended use for psychedelic was according to its definition :)

"The word psychedelic is an English term coined from the Greek words for "soul," ψυχή (psyche), and "manifest," δήλος (delos). A psychedelic experience is characterized by the perception of aspects of one's mind previously unknown, or by the creative exuberance of the mind liberated from its ostensibly ordinary fetters. Psychedelic states are an array of experiences elicited by sensory deprivation as well as by psychedelic substances. Such experiences include hallucinations, changes of perception, synesthesia, altered states of awareness, mystical states, and occasionally states resembling psychosis"

I just hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way. Somehow I was joking (but somehow not, LOL).
For me psych music is like, uh... u lose yr mind after the beginning and when the end comes through, you ask yourself where the fuck have yr mind been all the time :p
Cheers

I have the LP version of this but have never heard the other variations. Am I somehow missing a download link? Thanks for posting some of Jackman's work. I'm a huge fan of his works.
Great blog.
